Nearly half of U.S. parents with adult children say their child has moved back home at some point, according to a 2026 survey of 2,325 respondents from financial services company Thrivent.
As housing prices continue to climb in many parts of the country, living with parents no longer carries the stigma it once did. In fact, it can be a smart financial move that benefits parents as well as children.
While some parents may be frustrated by an adult child at home, others may welcome the opportunity to have their children close.
“I think it depends a lot on family dynamics,” says John Cervantes, partner and senior investment advisor with Prime Capital Financial in San Antonio, Texas.
